King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt—the Honesdale Rotary is sure you’ll enjoy Bobby Kyle and his Band.  Kyle will show off his signature style on Sunday evening, May 29^th, at Rusty Palmer’s on the Texas-Palmyra Highway, Honesdale, to benefit the Rotary and Honesdale EMS.

Kyle’s long career includes playing for seven years with Grammy Award winner Johnny “Clyde” Copeland, until the legendary Blues-man’s death in 1997. Prior to that, Kyle performed for six years with Handy Award winner Eddie Kirkland.

The Handy Award, now called the Blues Music Award, is the genre’s top honor. Kyle performs internationally, but he’s originally from Milford in Pike County.  Blues, Brews & BBQ includes six beer tastings (one more than last year), BBQ and specialty sides, non-alcoholic beverages and a gift basket raffle. Honesdale Rotary Announces 2^nd Annual Blues, Brews, BBQ

(Honesdale, March 18, 2011)… Pump it UP!  The countdown has begun for the Honesdale Rotary’s second annual Blues, Brews and BBQ at Rusty Palmer’s on Route 6, Honesdale. The fun kicks off Sunday, May 29^th, Memorial Day weekend, from 6pm to 9-ish.

“We have a lot of new things for folks to look forward to,” said John O’Reilly, event chair, “six beer tastings, which is one more than last year for the same price, with accompanying mouth-watering food selections, live Blues with Bobby Kyle and his band and a good cause.”

This year, the Rotary is partnering with Honesdale Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to help them purchase a new place to call home. The ambulance corps has been working out of temporary housing since an earthquake forced them out of their building on 12^th Street last year.

Honesdale EMS maintains base stations in Honesdale Borough and Lakeville (Paupack Township) and provides Basic Life Support Services in and around those areas as well as critical Advanced Life Support services (paramedics) to the Greater Wayne County and northwestern Pike County areas.

“We are thrilled that Honesdale Rotary wants to help us out,” said Sharon Gumpper, executive director, Honesdale EMS. “And we hope many people come out to enjoy the fun on May 29^th.”

Last year, at its inaugural Blues, Brews & BBQ, the Honesdale Rotary raised funds for  its projects and the Dessin Animal Shelter.

‘We thank the people who supported us in 2010 and invite them and their friends back again,” said O’Reilly.  “We’ll have plenty of table seating, plenty of food and drinks, and if it’s possible, even more fun than last year!”

Honesdale High School Interact Club Presents at District Conference

It’s one of the fastest growing clubs at Honesdale High School. Interact, the junior Rotary Club launched in 2009, counted 60 members at its first meeting this year on October 13th.

Officers of the Club shared their accomplishments with new members and earlier this month, with their adult counterparts, members of Rotary District 7410, at a district meeting in Scranton.

In a power-point presentation, the young Rotarians illustrated how they managed to raise more than $4,000 in one year for causes as diverse as mentoring projects for elementary school students in Honesdale — the “Little Buddies/Kids Care” program — to eradicating global polio — the “Purple Pinky Campaign” – to helping buy school materials for impoverished children in Afghanistan —“Pennies for Peace”— to a Guitar Hero tournament.

The Interact students also talked about fun outings with their “little buddies” on kayaking and swimming trips.

“It’s pretty nice, really, that kids from all different grades can get together for a common goal that involves helping so many people in need, including a lot of people none of us really know,” said Olivia Marin, a 9th grader from Lake Como and new Interact member.

We’ll be serving a breakfast BBQ (and fruit smoothies for HI Vegetarians) and having activities throughout the morning- We need to have as many guests there as possible!

An identity theft expert from the Office of the Attorney General offered tips and protection advice regarding identity theft, Tuesday in Honesdale.

David Shallcross, Public Protection Community Liaison, gave an hour-long presentation, which touched on many different types of fraud and offered different ways to protect against them. The event was hosted by the Honesdale Rotary and was held at Cordaro’s Restaurant.

“A lot of times people allow themselves to become victimized, and we’re going to educate people how to avoid that today,” said Shallcross.

Keeping control of your personal information and treating it like it’s cash is one of the most important things people can do to avoid identity theft, he said.

“When you have statements from the bank, or credit card bills…it needs to be shred, rather than just discarded” he said. “People will go through your trash…and they can obtain a lot of information that way.”
Identity theft is a $58 billion a year situation throughout the United States, Shallcross said. It affects 10 million Americans per year, and identity theft occurs every four seconds. Pennsylvania ranks 19th for reported identity thefts.

Shallcross said most fraud has some ties overseas. Fraud, he said, can be used to fund terrorists, tied to organized crime, harmful to the American Economy and a cause for personal stress.

All consumers get hurt by widespread fraud. Credit card companies lose billions to fraud through he reimbursement of fraud victims. This causes the credit card companies to put more pressure on merchants for service fees, which in turn forces the merchants to raise price of goods.

Over half of identity theft is perpetrated by people you know, he said.
“Be sure you look out for yourself. That’s the number one thing I can tell people. Do not release any personal and financial information to people you do not know,” he said. “Any type of solicitation, whether it be over the telephone, through the mail, or electronically on the computer, I would avoid giving out any personal information until I verified the source.”

Lunch & Learn with Honesdale Rotary!

The Honesdale Rotary Club will host a crime prevention presentation during its weekly lunch meeting at Cordaros Restaurant, Rt. 6, Honesdale, on April 13^th to help participants avoid becoming a victim of Identity theft. At the presentation, Dave Shallcross, Community Liaison for Attorney General Tom Corbett, will help you to avoid becoming an identity theft victim by sharing the latest tricks that criminals are using to commit fraud, scams and identity theft across Pennsylvania. While the presentation will be free, there will be a small charge of $10 to cover the cost of the buffet lunch.

A Background on Identity Theft:

Identity theft can have a far reaching and disastrous impact on victims – preventing them from purchasing a home or even getting a job – and those who fall prey often face an uphill battle to restore their good name. Each year, more than 10 million Americans have their personal information — including name, social security number, bank account or credit card number — stolen.  Often times, thieves use this information to open phony credit card, bank or utility accounts.

As Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement officer, Attorney General Tom Corbett has dedicated himself to protecting the citizens of the Commonwealth from identity thieves & scam artists through public outreach and by prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law, those who use another’s personal information to commit fraud. The Attorney General’s Community Liaison Team will present crime prevention information with the use of interactive discussions, video and PowerPoint presentations in order to make Pennsylvania’s citizens aware of the threat of fraud, scams and identity theft to the community, teach them how to avoid being victimized and to make sure they know to alert local law enforcement when they suspect criminal activity.

Hawley Rotary and Honesdale Rotary Collaborate at Volunteer Fair

On March 19th and 20th, the Hawley and Honesdale Clubs jointly staffed a booth at the Wayne County Area Office on Aging Volunteer Fair at the Honesdale Senior Citizen’s Center, with about 20 other area organizations.

The Clubs used this opportunity as a recruiting tool to attract service-oriented persons from the community from attendees at the fair, leadership from other community organizations, and participants in other volunteer organizations.

Additionally, the effort increased community awareness of Rotary and provided an opportunity to obtain program speakers for the clubs. Both clubs obtained contacts for potential follow-up as Club members.
